IWC has released four versions of its Portugieser models in this lovely “Horizon Blue” dial color and matching straps. Each of these four watches comes with a fancier 18k white gold case – rather than steel – and they include the Horizon Blue IWC Portugieser Automatic 40, Portugieser Chronograph, Portugieser Automatic 42, and this IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 Replica. What’s new with the IWC Portugieser case? The bezel is thinner and the crystal has a new box shape, allowing the watch to wear a bit smaller, at least for this larger 44mm wide model. That being said, it’s not a small mechanism, and IWC had to put them in a larger case. The overall dial layout of this generation of IWC’s Portugieser Perpetual Calendar watches has remained virtually unchanged. The dial continues to display the time, the power reserve indicator for the 7-day movement, the moon phases, and a full perpetual calendar display, including a current year counter. This roundness may be a signature style of the Portugieser series, but such a reflective part on the dial is not always a good thing, especially when paired with slim polished hands. On other models, readability can change dramatically depending on the light currently hitting the dial.

The price of this watch reflects the fact that the case is gold, and unfortunately, IWC does not currently offer the new Portugieser Perpetual Calendar in steel as far as I know. That being said, some other versions of the new Portugieser are available in steel, but not in this Horizon Blue dial color or IWC’s in-house automatic perpetual calendar movement.
